Hydrotherapy or water therapy, formerly called hydropath, involves the use of water for maintaining health, soothing pains or treating diseases.
Although ancient Greece and Rome had both adopted the beliefs that water had healing properties, it was the Romans who first integrated hydrotherapy into their social life, building temples and baths near natural springs and introduced spas throughout Roman Empire.
Modern hydrotherapy is commonly attributed to Father Sebastian Kneipp (1821-97), who believed that water would ’dissolve, remove and strengthen’. Dissolve matter-containing disease, remove diseased matter from the body and strengthen the body by restoring cleansed blood to the tissues and maximizing circulation.
Water treatments had built an enormous amount of expertise for thousand years. Immersion in water and exercising in water have always been a popular therapy in western countries.
In recent years some interesting studies have been carried out into the applications of hydrotherapy in home spa and health-care. According to the studies, hydrotherapy spa which uses the natural power of water, heat and oxygen together with aromatic bath oils has the power to improve blood and lymph circulation, relax tension in the tissues, alleviate pain and calm the nervous system. It is a therapeutic and beautiful way to use hydrotherapy spa for healing and wellness, and to balance our body and mind.
